José Colín is a private chef in Metro Detroit who believes food should bring people together. His cooking blends the discipline of Michelin-star kitchens with the comfort of home, creating dishes that feel warm, intentional, and deeply personal. Jose is passionate about understanding the people he cooks for and designing meals that reflect their tastes, traditions, and stories. His work is guided by the belief that great food creates connection, and every plate he serves is built around that purpose.
José's Culinary Journey
From California to Culinary Excellence
José Colín is a California native, born and raised in the Bay Area. Growing up, food was the centerpiece of his family’s life, whether at gatherings, Sunday meals, or celebrations. Those experiences sparked his passion for cooking and gave him an appreciation for how food connects people.
He pursued that passion at the California Culinary Academy, which led him to an externship in New York City. There, he met celebrity chef Aarón Sánchez, who became a mentor and helped shape his love for authentic Mexican cuisine.
Mentorship under World Class Chefs
From there, José trained under world-class chefs including Aarón at Centrico and Daniel Boulud at Café Boulud, where he deepened his expertise in both Mexican and French cuisine. He later joined the Thomas Keller Restaurant Group, spending six years at The French Laundry, three of them as Sous Chef, honing discipline, leadership, and precision in a three Michelin Star kitchen.
After leaving fine dining, José expanded into private events and high-profile dinners in the Bay Area. For nearly a decade, he served as a private chef for families in Palo Alto, designing tailored menus and supporting their unique lifestyles.
Celebrating Flavor and Togetherness
Today, José brings that same level of craft and care to his work as a personal chef in Metro Detroit. What he loves most about being a personal chef is the chance to connect directly with the people he cooks for, understand their preferences, create meals that fit their daily lives, and be part of the moments that matter most around the table. Unlike the high-pressure pace of restaurants, this work allows José to slow down, focus on a more personalized approach, and translate his fine-dining experience into food that feels approachable, comforting, and memorable. His journey has come full circle, from his mother’s kitchen in California to Michelin-starred restaurants, and now into homes where he can share what he loves most, making meals that bring people together.
